Proper Waste Management: Waste Segregation

We need to understand and practice the proper waste management. Segregation is very important. Through awareness of proper waste segregation and management, we could lessen the amount of our waste produced, reuse and recycle things, and recover waste for composting.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act 9003) refers to the "systematic administration of activities which provide for segregation at source, segregated transportation, storage, transfer, processing, treatment, and disposal of solid waste and all other waste management activities which do not harm the environment"

We can segregate our trash in our homes to the 3 basic segregation system namely biodegradables, non-biodegradables, and recyclables.

Biodegradable

  • Biodegradable wastes are those waste materials that are degraded by abiotic elements like oxygen, temperature, UV, etc., and also natural species like bacteria, fungi, and microbes.
  • Food waste, fruits and vegetable peelings, leaves, woods, flowers, and wet paper

Non-biodegradable

  • Non-biodegradable waste is defined as a substance that cannot be decomposed or dissolved naturally and acts as a source of pollution.
  • paints, chemicals, bulbs, cable wires, batteries, non-biodegradable plastics

Recyclable

  • These are non-biodegradable waste that can be recycled or reused again.
  • Paper, plastic bottles, metal, glass

Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

Furthermore, we can segregate our recyclables into 4 namely "Plastics, Glass, Metals, and Paper". We can dispose this to MRFs (Material Recovery Facility) in our respective barangays.

We are given this place to live in so we are held responsible in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of our planet. I hope that we will spread more awareness about the proper waste segregation and management and we must practice these ourselves. The future lies in your hands in saving our planet Earth.
